This charming, detached, stone cottage for two nestles in a popular location and is ideal for walkers, cyclists and well-behaved pets. Situated in the charming market town of Dalton-in-Furness, this spacious cottage is set away from the main road, yet lies within easy reach of the Lake District and south west Lakeland beaches. There are many cycle paths close by for all abilities, and walkers can enjoy the Old Man of Coniston and Black Combe. Golf courses are available locally and for boating enthusiasts, Lake Windermere is just a 20-minute drive away. Dalton-in-Furness provides holidaymakers with a superb array of pubs, restaurants and supermarkets.
The ancient town of Dalton-in-Furness lies in a narrow valley on the part of Furness which extends deep into Morecambe Bay. Once this was the leading town of Furness, and was an important centre for administration and justice. The Pele Tower known as Dalton Castle, is close by, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. A guided tour around this small, but intriguing building gives a fascinating insight into the lives of the abbot and monks of Furness, at one time amongst the most powerful in the country. The ruins of the abbey are close by, nestling in a peaceful wooded valley.
Not far from Dalton Castle is the red sandstone church of St Mary. In the graveyard lies George Romney (1734-1804), the famous portrait painter who was born in the town. Many examples of his work may be seen at Abbot Hall in Kendal.
Within easy reach of the town is the South Lakes Wild Animal Park which is very much concerned with conservation. The charming town of Ulverston is about 10 minutes’ drive. It is the birthplace of Stan Laurel, and home to the world’s only Laurel and Hardy Museum. It has the world’s shortest, widest and deepest canal, and is just 1½ miles from the sea at Morecambe Bay. There is also the Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre, International Centre for Modern Buddhism and Temple for World Peace.
A very popular day trip is the steam train from Haverthwaite up to Windermere on the Haverthwaite Steam Railway. You can visit Lakeland Motor Museum that includes 140 classic cars and motorbikes, all carefully assembled over 50 years. Dalton railway station gives easy access to Barrow-in-Furness or in the southerly direction, to Grange-over-Sands, Arnside and Lancaster.
To the north of Dalton-in-Furness is the spectacular Duddon Estuary and Duddon Valley, with Cartmel and Grizedale Forest within easy reach.
