The Tower was built circa 1462, by William Wayneflete, Bishop of Winchester, Lord High Chancellor of England and founder of Magdalen College, Oxford. Also known as Wolsey’s Tower due to the Cardinal’s frequent residency as described at length throughout Man Booker Prize winner, Hillary Mantel’s book, “Wolf Hall.”
Owners of the Tower include King Henry VIII and Edward VI, Queen Elizabeth I, Prime Minister, Henry Pelham, Equerries Richard Drake and John Latton, Governor of Jamaica, Sir Thomas Lynch, stockbroker, John Spicer, Lord and Lady D'Abernon, Master of the Rolls, Sir Raymond Francis Evershed and American stage and screen actress, Frances Day.
Residents include three Spanish Admirals captured during the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and other visitors include the great circumnavigator Sir Francis Drake, English antiquarians and writers, John Aubrey and Horace Walpole, novelist, Jane Austen and Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova. Reference has even been made to the estate of 'Asher' by the literary great, William Shakespeare.
