HISTORICAL:
From 1320 to 1579, this courtyard was the property of the Abbey of Canons of the Order of St. Augustine, located in Autrey, near Rambervilliers in the Vosges.
Adri is the Alsatian translation of Autrey and Hof the court in German.
In 1579, the Abbey of Autrey sold this property to the bourgeois Melchior Strauss, gourmet by profession in Riquewihr. To transform the existing dwelling, he turned to a Milan mason, Anthoni Mutzat. The contract passed on July 1, 1579, kept in the Departmental Archives, describes the work to be done, including the construction of an oriel. It is built of pink sandstone and oak wood sides, is engraved with the date 1579, different geometric patterns and a snake.
The modifications were made in 2 years as evidenced by the date 1581 engraved on the house. The house, whose facade is 18 meters high, is joined by a tower with spiral staircase of 13.50 meters. It is crowned by an arch with eight ribs supporting a terrace from which one enjoys an exceptional sight on the roofs of Riquewihr, the full of the Rhine, the Kayserstuhl and the Black Forest. The guard in yellow sandstone completes the finery of the building. The entrance door on angle is surmounted by two shielded shields and engraved initials IF (Johann FEHR).
The Adrihof has a small courtyard with a well dated 1587 and 1786 with the initials HGH (Hans Georges Hugel), a wooden Louis XIII style gallery, a large cellar staircase dated 1410, the press building and the common . The interior of the house is also worthy of interest (wall frescoes, painted ceiling, doors with braces) and the whole is, as wrote the famous historian Riquewihr Fernand Zeyer, an eloquent testimony of the artistic sense which the patricians had at the age of their city.
