Ortona is a beautiful town that stands on a cliff overlooking the Adriatic and is known above all for the ancient port, which has always been the most important in Abruzzo.
Interesting to see are the Aragonese Castle and the Cathedral.
The Castle which is located on the edge of the town of Ortona, in a spectacular position overlooking the sea, has a fifteenth-century origin (1452) linked to the Aragonese domination in the Abruzzo region.
The majestic Cathedral of San Tommaso, however, stands in the center of the city.
The church, built on the ruins of a pagan temple dedicated to Janus, has undergone various destructions and renovations over the centuries.
The temple has a longitudinal pattern that seems to follow the model of the great Apulian basilicas, which had already been set up in the first decades of the thirteenth century.
Since 1258 it has housed, in the crypt, the relics of the Apostle Thomas and the tombstone in chalcedony stolen from Chios, the Aegean island, by the Oronese Leone during a military action.
At the end of 1570 she became a cathedral and on 23 December 1859, with the bull of Pius IX, she was awarded the title of minor basilica.
The imposing temple, after the destruction of the Second World War, was rebuilt fragmentarily and its ancient splendor are visible
the two portals of the thirteenth century,
the ancient sacristy,
the Chapel of S. S. Sacramento with the bas-reliefs of the Oronese Perez and that of San Tommaso, adorned with ceramics by Tommaso Cascella, where the bust-reliquary of the saint is currently preserved.
In the crypt below the main altar are the relics of the apostle Thomas, protector of the city, preserved in a gilded copper box, with the oval depicting the apostle, the work of the Ortonese painter Tommaso Alessandrini. Between the altar and the throne is the original chalcedony tombstone which bears the inscription San Tommaso in Greek.
Every year, on the first Sunday of May, on the occasion of the patronal feast, plenary indulgence can be made.
The event is celebrated with a sumptuous Renaissance-style procession and the handing over of the keys of the crypt to the Archbishop who opens the same and begins the rites of forgiveness and the display of the Sacred Relics. The interesting Capitular Museum is annexed to the Cathedral
