Just down the road is St Jean de Luz, a jewel in the Basque Country This is a town full of charm, from the colourful boats moored in the port to the delightful squares and pleasant pedestrian streets lined with boutique shops and restaurants. It is the last major town before the Spanish border heading south the next major town you come to is Saint Sebastian We are in France of course, but also in the Basque country, which has a rich culture and heritage still visible today in the distinctive architecture, traditional dress and language of the region A cornerstone of Basque cuisine is the Espelette pepper, used in the production of Bayonne ham if you head into the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains to the village of Espelette just half an hour away, you can see these red peppers drying in the traditional way quite a sight The stunning Pyrenees are also close by for walking, hiking, cycling, rafting or bird watching, if you enjoy an active style of holiday.
