Excellent restaurants and coffee shops, diverse shopping and art galleries, refined as well as notorious drinking establishments, live music, people watching, biking/hiking the new Legacy Trail (year-round), fishing or rafting the Truckee River, Truckee Community Arts Center for live theatre, Truckee Thursdays with craft fair, food trucks, live music and beer garden (summer), Truckee Regional Park with disc golf, skateboard park, ice skating (winter) and Music in the Park ( summer), Farmers Market (summer), Truckee Rec Center with climbing wall and new Swim Center and Truckee’s own public golf course Ponderosa affectionately known by locals as “Pondo”. Truckee being the gateway town to Lake Tahoe and the Northern Sierras makes it the perfect location as your choice for a vacation Historically Truckee’s development has always been tied directly to its location at the edge of the Sierras and the “doorway to the west” over Donner Pass. Native Indians would spend summers in the surrounding area fishing and hunting. The first pioneers on wagon trains would rest along the river and Donner Lake before tackling the climb over the pass. The story of the Donner Party in the winter of 1846/47 is well known and has been described as one of the most bizarre and spectacular tragedies in California history and western U.S. migration. From 1848 -55 the California gold rush brought a flood of gold seekers traveling west to seek their fortune. Soon though there was a rough and scrabble town with boarding houses, saloons and livery stables. Truckee’s growth was further fueled as the logging and lumber industry soon exploded with the demand for timber to support the gold mines in California and silver mines in Nevada. All these logs and lumber transported by man, horse and flume until the advent of the railroad. Truckee has long been known as a major railroad town. The first train arrived in Truckee in 1867 a year and a half before the golden spike was driven in Promontory Point, Utah in 1869. Truckee was the perfect staging point and roundabout location for supply trains from Sacramento. It also was the base for the men and machines responsible for clearing the huge amounts of snow that would bury the tracks during the long stormy winters of the High Sierra. Today the rail line is a major east- west route for the Union Pacific Railroad freight line carrying almost anything you can think of including fresh and frozen food, beverages, bulk grain, anything automotive from parts to finished autos, petro chemicals, fertilizer, soda ash, coal, and industrial raw and finished goods. The ‘Washoe Zephyr’ passenger train makes a daily stop in Truckee on its way to either Chicago, Illinois or Emeryville, Ca. For those guests of the Downtown House with a romantic heart and sense of history, the occasional train rumbling through town can be a thoughtful and even thrilling experience, for the very light sleeper though, it occasionally may be seen as a minor inconvenience.
